The Ondheim Theodish Fellowships view on the Importance of beards in Norse Heathenry. Written by Thane Christopher Hatfield
In Norse Heathenry and specifically the Ondheim Theodish Fellowship, the significance of beards transcends mere aesthetics; it embodies a profound connection to cultural identity, spirituality, and societal roles. This paper delves into the multifaceted reasons why beards are regarded as essential for adherents of Norse Heathen beliefs.
Beards hold a central position in our culture, symbolizing masculinity, wisdom, and strength. Throughout history, the beard has been an emblem of honor and dignity among Norsemen, signifying adherence to traditional values and customs. It serves as a visible marker of one’s connection to the ancient Norse heritage, fostering a sense of pride and solidarity within the community. Many Viking graves have been discovered with grooming tools such as razors and beard combs indicating the importance of maintaining facial hair among our ancestors.
The Icelandic Sagas, such as the Sagas of Icelanders and the Sagas of the Norse Kings, provide rich descriptions of Norse society and culture, including references to beards. For example, in the Saga of Egil Skallagrimsson. Egil is viewed by many as the quintessential role model from the pre-Christian age of our ancestors. Egil was what modern people call a renaissance man being a skaldic poet, a statesman, an expert warrior and one of the most sought-after advocates at Thing. Furthermore, Egil is described as having a formidable beard, which is the outward representation of such a formidable and revered man who we all seek to emulate.
The Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda are primary sources of Norse mythology, containing numerous descriptions and depictions of the gods, including their physical attributes such as beards. Within our mythology, the gods themselves are often depicted with beards, further elevating the facial hair to a divine status. Odin, Thor, and other gods are portrayed as bearded figures, embodying attributes such as wisdom, courage, and power. Loki, who is known to Heathens as the agent of chaos and strife is the only entity that is specifically referenced as beardless. As practitioners of Norse Heathenry seek to align themselves with the values and traits of the gods, maintaining a beard becomes not only a cultural practice but also a spiritual endeavor, symbolizing a connection to the divine realm. In my personal practice I utilize the time and care spent on my beard for personal reflection and meditation to reconnect with the gods.
In Norse society, beards are associated with virility and masculinity, reflecting an individual’s maturity and prowess. The beard serves as a visual cue of one’s ability to protect and provide for their kin, echoing the traditional roles of Norse men as warriors, leaders, and providers. By cultivating a beard, adherents of Norse Heathenry embrace their masculine identity and honor our timeless ideals to build our gefrain.
Beards also play a significant role in fostering camaraderie and social bonds within the Norse Heathen community. Shared experiences of growing and grooming beards create opportunities for camaraderie and mutual respect among tribesmen. Bearded individuals often form close-knit networks, united by a common dedication to their cultural and spiritual heritage. Thus, the beard serves as a visible expression of solidarity and belonging within the Norse Heathen community. This has become so widely accepted that multiple branches of the United States armed services now allow Norse Heathens to wear beards in uniform. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2019/07/18/meet-the-first-norse-heathen-airman-to-grow-a-beard-in-the-air-force/
In conclusion, the significance of beards in Norse Heathenry extends beyond mere fashion or personal preference. Beards embody a rich tapestry of cultural, spiritual, and social meanings, symbolizing masculinity, tradition, and divine connection. As Norse Heathens we in the Ondheim Theodish Fellowship strive to uphold the values of our ancestors and honor our gods, the beard stands as a tangible reminder of our heritage and a badge of commitment to our faith.
-May the gods and ancestors see us all.
